Welcome to this web page, devoted to the LMS Class 5 mixed traffic 4-6-0 locomotives as designed by Sir William A. Stanier, otherwise generally known as the LMS Black 5.  First of all, a few words about what this is not, at the risk of putting things back to front. This is not intended to be a definitive history of the LMS and later British Railways Black 5s, nor a detailed technical description of them. If you are looking for more information, there have already been many books published on the LMS Black 5s, most recently the new series on the class from Wild Swan, and the book on the Class in the Ian Allan Series, Locomotives in Detail by John Jennison and David Clarke. This web page is just a place to show some photographs of the LMS Black 5s, both in preservation and (in the archives sections) in service with the LMS and later with British Railways up to the end of steam in 1968. There are photos of other LMS and BR standard classes too.

The photographs are taken by me or from my collection, unless credited to another photographer. So far as I know all photographs taken by other photographers are correctly credited to the photographer in question (where known) but if you think any photographs are wrongly credited, or if you can add any information to any captions, please contact me following the link below. The site is in several parts which you can access by following the buttons below. Here you will find colour and monochrome photographs of these engines in preservation, four pages of archive photographs of the engines in service with BR and the LMS, and some photographs of other LMS classes and BR standard classes. The links page will take you to some others web pages about the LMS Black 5s and related railway topics. Thanks to all those photographers and contributors who have provided material for the site here.

This page was first published in March, 2005 and was last updated on 6th October 2006 with new photos of 45407's trip to Scotland added to Page 3 of the Colour Section
